Manchester United splurges £17m to re-sign former defender

Man United currently sit 13th in the Premier League after an underwhelming first half of the 2024/25 season. Since Ruben Amorim took over in November 2024, the Red Devils haven't seen much improvement in their poor form barring a 2-1 away win against Man City in December and a 2-2 draw last Sunday with Liverpool at Anfield.

But fans are hoping Amorim can make his own mark on the Man United squad with the January transfer window now open. However, the club's hierarchy are expected to operate with a 'sell-to-buy' policy to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and regulations.

Academy graduates Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo have both been linked with moves away as sales of academy players count as 'pure profit' from an FFP perspective. But a former academy star could sensationally return to the club.

Left-back Alvaro Fernandez joined United from Real Madrid's academy in September 2020. He began training with the first team in the 2021/22 season as well as playing for the Under-23s. The 21-year-old was called up to the senior squad by Ralf Rangnick in April 2022 for the Premier League match with Chelsea.

A month later, Alvaro Fernandez was named the club's Under-23s Player of the Year. He spent the majority of the 2022/23 season on loan at Preston North End before loan spells at Granada and Benfica in the 2023/24 campaign.

And it was at the Lisbon-based club where Alvaro Fernandez found his form, earning him a permanent deal with the Portuguese giants in May 2024. This season he has gone from strength to strength making 26 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

The Spaniard left Man United for a reported £5 million transfer fee but could return due to a buy-back clause in his contract worth a reported £16 million according to the Express while the Centre Devils revealed that the buy-back clause is £16.7 million.

It could prove to be a shrewd piece of business considering Luke Shaw has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. While Diogo Dalot, who has often filled in at left-back, is more suited to the right-back position.
