Maresca indifferent in winter transfer window 2025

Maresca indifferent in winter transfer window 2025

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has insisted that signing a new centre-back is not a priority for the club in the January transfer window. The Italian tactician explained that he has ample options at his disposal and making further additions would be unnecessary.

The Blues have recently faced defensive challenges due to injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, impacting the team's strength. Meanwhile, Axel Disasi has not always performed at his best, with the heavy workload potentially affecting his mental and physical state.

Despite calls for Chelsea to reinforce their backline with a quality centre-back during the winter transfer window to compete effectively across multiple competitions, Maresca holds a different view.

The Italian strategist recently expressed his stance: "My message has been very clear from the beginning: We only sign players if they improve the team. We don't need to add players just to increase the numbers. That's unnecessary and not well thought out. What we do must be aimed at upgrading and updating the quality of the current squad.”

"If Fofana can recover quickly, we will all be very happy. However, we still have other options like Benoit (Badiashile) who is about to return, or Josh (Acheampong), Axel (Disasi) and Levi (Colwill). All of them can handle this position well. I think we are fine at the moment. It is not necessary to sign a contract just to fill a vacancy.”

Chelsea are currently enduring a difficult period with a four-match winless streak in the Premier League, largely attributed to defensive instability. Statistics reveal that Chelsea have kept only four clean sheets in 19 matches this season – an alarming figure for a club with such high ambitions. Nevertheless, fans remain confident that Maresca will find a way to rectify the situation in the crucial upcoming period.
