Notably, Superman promises a vibrant ensemble of superheroes and actors, with David Corenswet leading as the Man of Steel. However, the journey into Gunn’s DC projects began with Maria Bakalova, who voices Princess Ilana of Pokolistan in Creature Commandos.

Maria Bakalova’s groundbreaking role

Bakalova, known for her role as Cosmo the Space Dog in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy series, was the first actor Gunn approached for a role in the new DC universe. “Maria was the first person we ever offered a role in the DCU,” Gunn shared with Entertainment Weekly. “I wrote the role for her and needed to cast her early on because her native language is Bulgarian. We had to ensure the script accommodated her language and character.”

Reflecting on this opportunity, Bakalova expressed her excitement. “I was on a plane, feeling a bit down after wrapping Guardians Vol. 3, thinking it might be my last chance to work with James. Then, I received a message from him about creating a character for me in Creature Commandos. I was thrilled to read the script, which is full of suspense and layers that keep you questioning where your loyalties should lie.”

Princess Ilana: the femme fatale of Creature Commandos

Bakalova’s character, Princess Ilana, is a complex figure. She uses her femininity to manipulate others, making her motives a puzzle for both the characters and the audience. “Ilana is a very complex character,” Bakalova explained. “She’s a woman who knows how to use her charm and innocence as a facade, but underneath, she’s strong and calculating. The show’s finale finally reveals her true nature.”

In a twist that kept viewers on edge, the finale unveils that Princess Ilana, initially portrayed as a damsel in distress, is the mastermind behind the chaos in Creature Commandos. She manipulates the team of monsters into doing her bidding, aiming to eliminate superheroes and dominate the world. “Up until the last 10 minutes, you’re not sure of her true intentions,” Bakalova said. “But she wants control, power, and to be underestimated.”

A new perspective on monsters

While the series delves into the backstories of each team member, portraying them as misunderstood or unwillingly transformed into monsters, Ilana’s story stands apart. Unlike the others, she is a privileged figure with no tragic past, which makes her ultimate betrayal even more chilling. “Creature Commandos explores what it means to be a monster,” Bakalova noted. “Ilana is the biggest monster of all, despite appearing innocent and needing protection.”

The future of Gunn’s DC universe

As Creature Commandos sets the stage for future projects, Maria Bakalova’s role as Princess Ilana underscores the depth and complexity Gunn is bringing to the DC universe. With Superman on the horizon and a growing roster of compelling characters, Gunn’s vision is shaping up to be a dynamic and intricate addition to the superhero genre.
