Will Ferrell surprises fans with a disheveled Buddy the Elf at Kings game
Will Ferrell is bringing Christmas cheer in his own unique way, by showing up as a disheveled version of Buddy the Elf and enjoying a beer at an NHL game.

On the latest episode of New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, the 57-year-old actor shared the story behind his surprise appearance at a Los Angeles Kings game last month. Ferrell donned his Buddy the Elf costume, but with a twist: he was smoking a candy cigarette and sipping on a beer.
Ferrell joked about the unconventional look, saying, "Buddy the Elf got laid off, I think, from the North Pole. He’s having a pull from his beer. He’s smoking a cig." He added, “I get these weird ideas every now and then.”
The comedian, a longtime Kings fan and season ticket holder, revealed he pitched the idea to his wife, Viveca Paulin, before going forward with it. “I said, ‘Gosh, over the break, it’d be funny if I just got a Buddy the Elf costume and didn’t shave for like a week,’” he recalled. “And that was it.”
Ferrell was taken aback by the attention his stunt generated. “The reaction was insane,” he said. “They were like, ‘What is he doing? Is he promoting something?’”
Ferrell’s prank took place during the Dec. 29 game between the L.A. Kings and the Philadelphia Flyers at Crypto.com Arena. His outfit quickly drew attention, with FanDuel Sports Network journalist Carrlyn Bathe mentioning in a broadcast that she approached Ferrell, who was smoking his candy cigarette and looking unkempt. “He’s got a five o'clock shadow, looking a little bit disgruntled,” Bathe said. “He said it was a tough holiday season, and he's looking for a Kings win.”
In a bit of holiday luck, the Kings ended up winning the game, and Ferrell’s prank was a big hit. The actor continues to entertain fans with his quirky sense of humor, proving that sometimes the best way to spread cheer is through unexpected and playful surprises.
